A ChatGPT Cover Letter Prompt That Doesn't Make Things Up
The biggest risk with AI cover letters isn't bland writing. It's confident fiction: invented metrics, tools you've never used, or titles you never held. Here's a setup that prevents it.
Step 1: lock the source of truth
Below is my master resume. Treat it as the ONLY source of truth about me. Never invent employers, titles, dates, tools, certifications or metrics. If the job needs something I don't have, tell me. RESUME: [paste]
Step 2: themes first, then the letter
For this job, pick 1–2 themes where its needs map to REAL proof in my resume. Then write a 150–220 word cover note: plain, specific, no "I am excited to apply." After it, list JD keywords I can NOT honestly claim. JOB: [paste]
Free tip: ask for the "can't claim" list every time. It gives you an honesty check and an interview-prep list in one step. Those are exactly the gaps an interviewer will probe.
Checklist before you send
- Every number appears in your resume
- Company name and role title are correct
- One specific detail from the posting is referenced
- Under 250 words
