Automate Job Applications the Right Way: Fit Scoring with n8n

"Automating job applications" usually means bots that spray résumés, and those often break site terms and produce weak applications. The automation that actually helps is triage: deciding in seconds which jobs deserve your effort.

The workflow

  1. Form Trigger: paste company, title, URL and the full job description.
  2. Code: load your master resume and preferences (titles, locations, minimum salary, dealbreakers).
  3. HTTP Request: the LLM returns JSON with match %, must-haves, matched and missing keywords, red flags and posted salary.
  4. Code: apply your thresholds (for example, GO at 70 or more, STRETCH at 50–69). Don't let the model decide.
  5. Gmail plus Google Sheets: email yourself the result and log it.
Free tip: enforce the decision in code, not in the prompt. Models drift. Have the model output a number, then convert it to GO/STRETCH/SKIP with a fixed rule, and auto-SKIP when there are 3 or more red flags. Your pipeline stays consistent week to week.

FAQ

Does fit scoring replace reading the job?
No. It flags must-haves and red flags quickly so you spend your reading time on the jobs worth it.
