How to Automate Job Applications Without LinkedIn Bots
Plenty of tools promise to "apply to 100 jobs while you sleep." LinkedIn's User Agreement prohibits bots and other automated methods for accessing the service or sending messages, so those tools put your account at risk. They also tend to produce generic applications. A better rule: automate the prep, not the submission.
Safe to automate
- Triage: score each job against your resume (match %, missing must-haves, red flags) before you spend time on it.
- Tailoring drafts: a cover note and 3–5 bullets built only from facts in your resume, for you to edit.
- Tracking: one row per application with a status and a follow-up date.
- Reminders: a morning email listing follow-ups due.
Keep manual
- Clicking "apply" and answering screening questions
- Messaging recruiters or hiring managers
- Anything that logs into LinkedIn or a job board on your behalf
A 4-step workflow you can build in n8n
- Form Trigger: paste company, title, link and description.
- LLM: fit score as JSON. Your code applies GO/STRETCH/SKIP thresholds.
- LLM (GO/STRETCH only): cover note, bullets and "keywords you can't claim."
- Google Sheets plus Gmail: log the job and email yourself the package. A scheduled workflow sends follow-up reminders.
